Chapter 21

“I think you need therapy,” Gina said quietly as they sat down on the bed again. She reached out, taking his hand in hers, and held it tight. She didn’t want to let go, couldn’t let go. Something about his touch gave her strength. He had been so open, so vulnerable with her, and while she had talked about herself before, now was the time to let it all out.

“I will never understand how you feel right now,” she began, and swallowed hard. “My mom, it’s not like it was with you. I mean, she never physically hurt me or anything, but I’ve always been a disappointment. Never good enough, never living up to her expectations. But my abuela, I used to dream that she would take me away from my mom and let me stay at her house.”

Swallowing hard, Gina looked down at their joined hands. Their fingers were not interlocked, but she wished they were.

“She’s dead now, and I continue to be a disappointment.”

Silence settled over them, and she took in a deep breath, trying to figure out what else to say, or how to begin. Where could one even start, with so many years of trauma and anxiety?

“Why?” Tristan asked, squeezing her hand gently.

The only place to start was in the beginning.

“My mom’s parents, they had money. A lot of money, really. They expected my mother to marry well, but my mother wanted to be a doctor. She never had the grades for it, and then ended up falling in love with the guy that mowed my grandparent’s lawn.”

And so began years of pain.

“She ran away with him because she was pregnant. They got married, and her parents never forgave her for it. I don’t know why. My mama had all these dreams for her children, that they would live the life she couldn’t. We were all supposed to be doctors and to prove to my racist grandparents that her half-breeds were good enough, more than good enough, but there was a flaw in her plans.”

And so entered her becoming a disappointment.

“Is it the fact you puke at the sight of blood?” he asked gently.

Gina immediately laughed. “Yeah. And, from that point on, I spent more time with my abuela, my dad’s mom, and my tio. I became everything my mother hated. She always wanted to impress my abuela as well, but Abuelita saw she pushed us too hard. It’s a long story, and nowhere near as horrible as yours. I know where my mom is, and I have felt love and loved back, but I never got to have my own hopes and dreams. I’ve always tried to live up to my mother’s.”

Silence settled over them, and Gina felt a few tears in her eyes. She had never dreamed anything for herself, because what was the point? She had to do what her mother said, had to be good enough, and had to please her mama. So, she had entered other scientific studies, eventually being told which one to take, even though it was still never good enough.
